Can You Get ED Treatment Through Telehealth?

Yes — and for many men, a telehealth visit is easier and more comfortable than an in-person appointment. Here's how it works.

For many men, the thought of discussing erectile dysfunction face-to-face with a doctor is uncomfortable enough to avoid altogether. That avoidance means the problem goes unaddressed — sometimes for years.

Telehealth has changed this. A significant proportion of men who wouldn't visit a clinic in person are willing to have a secure video call or complete a thorough intake with an online physician. And in most cases, a telehealth evaluation is entirely appropriate for ED.

What Can Actually Be Done Via Telehealth?

For the majority of men with ED, the initial evaluation and prescription can be handled entirely online. Here's what that typically involves:

Medical history review

The physician reviews your overall health history: existing conditions, medications, cardiovascular risk factors, surgical history, and the specifics of your ED symptoms (how long, how often, under what circumstances, whether erections occur in other situations like during sleep).

Medication safety screening

The most critical clinical question is whether you take nitrates (like nitroglycerin). [Nitrates remain an absolute contraindication](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15729374/) to PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil and tadalafil because the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. A thorough screening eliminates this risk.

Other medications and conditions that may affect treatment choice or dosing are also reviewed.

Recommendation and prescription

If you're a good candidate, the physician prescribes an appropriate medication at the right starting dose. Generic sildenafil or tadalafil can often be sent to a pharmacy of your choosing.

It's also worth knowing that ED can be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease. A [JAMA analysis of 9,457 men in the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16414947/) found that new-onset erectile dysfunction was associated with a meaningfully elevated risk of subsequent cardiovascular events — comparable in magnitude to current smoking or a family history of heart attack. ED treatment shouldn't end with a prescription; it should prompt a look at overall cardiovascular health.

When In-Person Evaluation Is Needed

Telehealth is appropriate for many men with ED, but not all. You'd need to be seen in person if:

  • You have cardiovascular symptoms that haven't been evaluated (chest pain, unexplained shortness of breath)
  • Your ED is accompanied by significant pain, trauma, or structural changes
  • Lab work is needed and you don't have recent results available
  • Your ED may be related to a condition requiring physical examination
  • Your situation is complex enough that in-person evaluation is clinically indicated

A responsible telehealth physician will tell you when in-person care is the right path.

What Telehealth Doesn't Replace

A telehealth ED consultation is appropriate for prescribing first-line medications. It doesn't replace:

  • Primary care for managing underlying conditions (cardiovascular disease, diabetes)
  • Urology referral for more complex presentations
  • Mental health care if psychological factors are significant

At Coral Health, Dr. Kim reviews every intake herself and makes clinical decisions individually. If something in your intake suggests the need for specialist care or in-person evaluation, she'll tell you that directly.

The Privacy Advantage

Privacy is a real concern for many men with ED. Telehealth eliminates the waiting room, the chance of running into someone you know, and the discomfort of talking through sensitive symptoms face to face.

Your Coral Health visit is HIPAA-secure. Your information is handled with the same legal protections as any medical encounter.

Florida Residents

Coral Health currently serves Florida residents only. Telehealth prescribing in Florida requires that Dr. Kim is licensed to practice in Florida and that you are physically located in Florida at the time of the visit. These requirements are met for all Coral Health patients.
